Letter 23

Hi folks, today I want to tell you about “unstuff your life” and how it can help you with the organization needed for living in small spaces. Todays letter is about establishing homes for your items in order to stay tidy. I hope you find it helpful.

When you’re living in a Kimbo or spending a long period of time in one, you’re going to want to stay organized. The longer you’re living in a Kimbo, the more you’ll accumulate; life requires an amount of “stuff” to stay at stasis and not need to get back to a home base to get something you need. This is what I’m saying: A small space can become your home base as long as you can effectively organize your essentials.

There’s a secret to staying organized on countertops that nobody’s talked about, it’s called a “Silicone Sticky Anti-Slip Gel Pad” and if you go type that into Amazon or into search, you’ll find many versions of the product. The ones that I like to use are the round ones and the way that I use them is to adhere a camping cup or two to my countertop in my Kimbo. It not only acts as a storage that stays still (when driving around) for the little items like a toothbrush or a lighter for your Kimbo fireplace, but it also acts as a way to have a backup cup if you have some company. That sticky pad turns your backup cup into a storage space and that’s awesome.

The other way I use these pads is to hold down items like my kettle (for whenever I need to make hot water) and I use it as a way to hold down pens in my desk area.

However you decide to use them, just trust me and get a few, you’ll find a use for them and you’ll really like having them.

Part of staying organized is that every item needs to have a “home” and a sticky pad is just that, it’s a defined location for a certain item where only it can live. When you’re done with the item, it goes back to its home. You’ll know where everything is and your place won’t look or feel cluttered. Give it a try!

Another way to stay organized is to use something like a “mesh zipper bag” or a “mesh pull string bag” for items that you store in the Kimbo wire baskets. Items like chargers and cables can go into these bags and that’s their “home”. You’ll never misplace them and you’ll always know where they are. Mesh storage bags are great because they’re see through and you’ll be able to know what’s inside before you even open it.

One of the last ways of getting organized that I’ll mention today is in getting rid of the things you don’t use. The wire baskets in a Kimbo make it easy to spot what to get rid of, but it’s an important practice to get into. One way to do this is to put a small sticky note on the items you haven’t used in 6 months or more. You don’t have to get rid of them right away but the sticky note will act as a flag to bring your attention to either use it soon or mentally let go of it so that it can be tossed or given away. The sticky note helps prepare your paradigm to let go of the item and that’s half the battle of getting organized and reducing the amount of stuff you have.

Go read “unstuff your life”. It’s a book that I had read many years ago and it helped me a lot; my life is better for it and I think it will help yours too.

Have a great New Years everybody. I hope you had an amazing time with family and friends this Christmas and I hope you have just as much fun together this New Years. Travel safe and talk to you soon.
