How it fits

Why a Kimbo works on a Nissan Frontier.

The Frontier had the longest production run of any midsize truck on the road — the D40 generation sold from 2005 all the way through 2021 with relatively few changes. That's a 16-year production run on essentially the same platform, which is unusual. The D41 (2022+) finally modernized the truck with a refreshed frame, updated suspension, and a meaningfully improved bed.

For a Kimbo install, both generations fit. The D40 (2005–2021) is the cheaper used-market option — the truck works, the geometry is right, and the 9-speed automatic on later years is fine. The D41 (2022+) is where the Frontier became a genuinely competitive midsize truck again, with payload approaching 1,610 lb on PRO-4X and SV trims. That's solid Kimbo install territory.

The Frontier is often overlooked in midsize-truck conversations dominated by Tacoma and the GM twins. It shouldn't be. For a buyer who values mechanical simplicity and isn't paying the Toyota tax, the Frontier is genuinely a strong Kimbo platform — and used-market pricing on D40s is friendly.

By generation

Year-by-year fit notes.

Truck-camper fit isn't one-size-fits-all across model years — frame, cab clearance, and suspension change between generations. Here's where each Nissan Frontier sits.

The math

Your payload margin, calculated.

Real numbers for a fully-provisioned Kimbo install on a Nissan Frontier at the middle of its payload range. Substitute your own door-jamb sticker for a precise calculation.

  • Nissan Frontier payload (mid-range)+ 1,445 lb
  • Kimbo 6 (base) 830 lb
  • Fresh water (4 gal) 32 lb
  • Propane (20 lb tank) 30 lb
  • Gear load 100 lb
  • 1 occupant in cab (200 lb) 200 lb

Remaining margin

+253 lb

Calculated using the midpoint of the Nissan Frontier's published payload range. Your specific truck's door-jamb sticker is what counts. Trim packages, options (sunroofs, larger wheels), and tow packages can swing this number by 200–500 lb in either direction.

The Kimbo team's pick

If we were buying a Nissan Frontier

If we were buying a Frontier for a Kimbo, we'd get a D41 PRO-4X Crew Cab with the long bed (6 ft). Strongest payload of the lineup, leaf-sprung rear, and the bed length lets the tailgate close. SV with the long bed is the same fit story at a lower price. Airbags and E-rated tires.
