Truck Bed Camper for Rivian R1T

The R1T fits the Kimbo 6 geometrically — but the EV-specific considerations (range, charging, off-grid travel) deserve a real conversation before the install.

How it fits

Why a Kimbo works on a Rivian R1T.

The R1T is the EV truck most likely to be a Kimbo platform — strong payload (1,764 lb), legitimate body-on-frame-equivalent structure (skateboard architecture), and bed-rail tie-down points that we can adapt to. The truck fits the Kimbo 6 geometrically, with adapter mounts. The reason it sits in the consultation tier rather than the fits tier isn't about the install — it's about whether the truck makes sense for the way you'll use it.

EV trucks behave differently with a 1,000+ lb camper installed. Rivian's published range is calculated empty; with a Kimbo on top, expect 25–35% range loss depending on speed and elevation. That's not a deal-breaker if your travel pattern is hub-and-spoke (drive to a destination, camp, drive back) — but it requires a different mental model than ICE-truck camping where you can refuel at any gas station. For extended off-grid travel, charging infrastructure becomes the constraint, not range itself.

Bed length (4.5') means tailgate-down operation only — same as Tacoma Short Bed. The R1T's gear tunnel (the storage compartment running under the bed) remains accessible with a Kimbo installed. Our adapter mounts work with Rivian's bed-rail tie-down points without modification of the truck. We've talked with several R1T owners about Kimbo installs and the engineering side is clear; the lifestyle fit is what we want to confirm before committing.

Truck-camper fit isn't one-size-fits-all across model years — frame, cab clearance, and suspension change between generations. Here's where each Rivian R1T sits.

The math

Your payload margin, calculated.

Real numbers for a fully-provisioned Kimbo install on a Rivian R1T at the middle of its payload range. Substitute your own door-jamb sticker for a precise calculation.

  • Rivian R1T payload (mid-range)+ 1,764 lb
  • Kimbo 6 (base) 830 lb
  • Fresh water (4 gal) 32 lb
  • Propane (20 lb tank) 30 lb
  • Gear load 100 lb
  • 1 occupant in cab (200 lb) 200 lb

Remaining margin

+572 lb

Calculated using the midpoint of the Rivian R1T's published payload range. Your specific truck's door-jamb sticker is what counts. Trim packages, options (sunroofs, larger wheels), and tow packages can swing this number by 200–500 lb in either direction.

The Kimbo team's pick

If we were buying a Rivian R1T

If we were considering an R1T for a Kimbo, we'd want the Dual-Motor or Tri-Motor configuration with the largest available battery pack (Max Pack if available). Standard battery + Kimbo + remote travel is a tighter range math than most owners are comfortable with after a few trips. Adventure trim or higher; skip Performance trim — the unique tuning doesn't translate to better camper performance.
