If you're cross-shopping the ZR2 and the Trail Boss for a Kimbo install, the Trail Boss is the quieter answer that gets recommended more often than the spec sheets suggest. You get the factory 2″ front lift, Rancho monotube shocks, and the off-road tire package — most of what makes a ZR2 a ZR2 — without the Multimatic DSSV damper price premium. For camper duty specifically, the Rancho monotube hardware handles Kimbo weight better than a base Silverado damper and at a fraction of the upgrade cost.

Where the Trail Boss really wins is payload. Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss build sheets routinely show 1,700–1,880 lb at the door-jamb sticker on the right engine/cab combinations — comfortably above a ZR2 (1,300–1,440 lb) and dramatically above a TRX (1,310 lb). For Kimbo 8 owners specifically, the 6′7″-bed Trail Boss is one of our cleanest install patterns: the bed is in the Kimbo 8's engineered range, the suspension carries the load, and the payload margin leaves room for water + propane + gear without door-jamb-sticker math anxiety.

Bed configuration matters here too. Trail Boss is available Crew Cab + 5′10″ or 6′7″, and on Custom Trail Boss you can get Double Cab + 6′7″ (worth knowing if you don't need the Crew Cab back-seat space and want a longer bed for a Kimbo 8). The 6′7″ bed is the answer if you're considering Kimbo 8 specifically — the 5′10″ bed limits you to Kimbo 6 + custom mounting.
