How it fits

Why a Kimbo works on a Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2.

The Silverado 1500 ZR2 ships with Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers — Formula-1-derived hardware that you don't usually see outside the Colorado ZR2 and the Camaro Z/28. They handle a wet Kimbo 6 better than any base Silverado damper we've worked with, and most ZR2 owners install Kimbos without adding airbags. The factory 2″ lift puts the truck closer to level once the rear settles under load, the same modest handling win we see on the F-150 Tremor.

Bed configuration determines which Kimbo. The ZR2 was originally Crew Cab + 5′10″ bed only (2022–2023), which makes Kimbo 6 the off-the-shelf answer and Kimbo 8 a closer call. From 2024+, GM added a Crew Cab + 6′7″ ZR2 option, which makes Kimbo 8 a genuine fit conversation — the 6′7″ bed is within the Kimbo 8's engineered range, and the DSSV dampers carry the weight without complaint. We're seeing more 6′7″ ZR2 owners on Kimbo 8 each quarter.

Worth flagging the ZR2 Bison sub-trim, which adds AEV steel front and rear bumpers, AEV-stamped skid plates, and a heavier accessory package. The hardware is excellent for off-road work, but it adds ~150 lb of curb weight which subtracts directly from payload. Bison stickers run closer to 1,300 lb than 1,440 lb. Bring your specific door-jamb numbers — the Bison-spec math is different from a base ZR2.

By generation

Year-by-year fit notes.

Truck-camper fit isn't one-size-fits-all across model years — frame, cab clearance, and suspension change between generations. Here's where each Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 sits.

Multimatic DSSV dampers handle Kimbo weight without aftermarket suspension. Kimbo 6 fits the 5′10″ or 6′7″ bed cleanly; Kimbo 8 needs review on the 5′10″ bed.

The math

Your payload margin, calculated.

Real numbers for a fully-provisioned Kimbo install on a Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 at the middle of its payload range. Substitute your own door-jamb sticker for a precise calculation.

Calculating for

  • Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 payload (mid-range)+ 1,370 lb
  • Kimbo 6 (base) 830 lb
  • Fresh water (4 gal) 32 lb
  • Propane (20 lb tank) 30 lb
  • Gear load 100 lb
  • 1 occupant in cab (200 lb) 200 lb

Remaining margin

+178 lb

Calculated using the midpoint of the Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2's published payload range. Your specific truck's door-jamb sticker is what counts. Trim packages, options (sunroofs, larger wheels), and tow packages can swing this number by 200–500 lb in either direction.

The Kimbo team's pick

If we were buying a Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2

If you're shopping a ZR2 for a Kimbo, get a 2024+ Crew Cab + 6′7″ bed. That bed length opens the Kimbo 8 conversation if you want it, and the Multimatic DSSV dampers carry either Kimbo without aftermarket suspension. Skip the Bison if Kimbo is the priority — the AEV bumpers eat ~150 lb of payload without changing the install pattern.
