Truck Bed Camper for Ram 1500 TRX

The TRX is the most powerful production half-ton ever sold, and the lowest-payload one. Kimbo 6 fits the bed; the math gets tight after that. We're honest about it.

How it fits

Why a Kimbo works on a Ram 1500 TRX.

The Ram 1500 TRX is the best argument we know for why payload matters more than horsepower. Kimbo 6 fits the TRX's 5′7″ bed — geometrically, it's a clean install. The complication starts at the door-jamb sticker. The 6.2L supercharged Hellcat adds substantial curb weight versus a base Ram 1500, and the resulting payload number runs a flat ~1,310 lb across most TRX builds. That's the lowest payload in any production half-ton truck currently on the road.

What does that mean in practice? A wet Kimbo 6 — including water, propane, jacks, electrical, and the standard kit — runs ~1,200 lb installed. Add two adults at 350 lb combined and gear at 100 lb, and you're at 1,650 lb of cargo against a 1,310 lb sticker. You can manage that with discipline (lighter water fills, gear sharing, riding solo on trips), but you can't manage it with margin. The TRX wasn't built to be a camper platform; it was built to do 0–60 in 4.5 seconds. Both can be true.

Production ended after the 2024 model year, so any TRX on the road today is a used truck. If you already own one and a Kimbo is the goal, we'll work through the math with you — there are real install patterns where it works (riding solo, dry-camping mostly, smaller propane tank). If you're shopping for a TRX specifically to install a Kimbo, we'd quietly point you at a Rebel or a Limited instead. Same Ram cab, same 5′7″ bed, ~500 lb more payload.

By generation

Year-by-year fit notes.

Truck-camper fit isn't one-size-fits-all across model years — frame, cab clearance, and suspension change between generations. Here's where each Ram 1500 TRX sits.

Kimbo 6 fits the bed geometrically, but a wet Kimbo 6 + two adults + gear runs right at the 1,310 lb door-jamb sticker. We pull out the calculator on every TRX install.

The math

Your payload margin, calculated.

Real numbers for a fully-provisioned Kimbo install on a Ram 1500 TRX at the middle of its payload range. Substitute your own door-jamb sticker for a precise calculation.

  • Ram 1500 TRX payload (mid-range)+ 1,310 lb
  • Kimbo 6 (base) 830 lb
  • Fresh water (4 gal) 32 lb
  • Propane (20 lb tank) 30 lb
  • Gear load 100 lb
  • 1 occupant in cab (200 lb) 200 lb

Remaining margin

+118 lb

Calculated using the midpoint of the Ram 1500 TRX's published payload range. Your specific truck's door-jamb sticker is what counts. Trim packages, options (sunroofs, larger wheels), and tow packages can swing this number by 200–500 lb in either direction.

The Kimbo team's pick

If we were buying a Ram 1500 TRX

If you already own a TRX and a Kimbo is the plan, run the door-jamb sticker math with us first — payload is tight enough that build choices (smaller propane tank, lighter battery package, no air-bag suspension upgrade) make the difference between a comfortable rig and one that's at sticker year-round. If you're shopping new for a Kimbo install, skip the TRX and look at a Rebel or Laramie — same Ram, ~500 lb more margin.
