Truck Bed Camper for Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

TRD Pro is the strongest off-road Tacoma trim out of the box. The factory FOX dampers handle Kimbo weight without aftermarket suspension — but the lift is a clearance variable to plan for.

How it fits

Why a Kimbo works on a Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro.

The TRD Pro is the trim we get the most questions about, and the answer is good news: yes, the Kimbo 6 fits a 3rd Gen TRD Pro (2017–2023) without compromise. The FOX 2.5 internal-bypass dampers were engineered to control off-road body motion under load, and they handle a fully wet Kimbo 6 (~1,200 lb installed weight) better than the base Tacoma's stock shocks. Most TRD Pro owners install Kimbos without adding airbags — the suspension was already specified for this kind of payload.

The complication, when it exists, is the factory 1.5″ front lift. With a stock TRD Pro the truck sits ~1.5″ nose-up, which means once you load a Kimbo and the rear settles, the rake is closer to level — usually a good thing for handling. But it also means jack-bracket extensions sometimes aren't needed even on the 3rd Gen, where they often help on the base SR/SR5. Confirm bed-rail height with the door-jamb sticker and we'll spec the install around your numbers.

The 4th Gen TRD Pro (2024+) is where the math gets tighter. The 4th Gen cab is already 3–4″ taller than 3rd Gen, and the i-FORCE Max hybrid powertrain adds around 250 lb of curb weight, which translates to less remaining payload. The TRD Pro 4th Gen has a class-leading payload number on paper, but most of that is consumed by the bigger cab, the hybrid battery, and the FOX 2.5 hardware itself. We're working with several 4th Gen owners on first-of installs and treating those as engineering reviews until the production solution is dialed in.

By generation

Year-by-year fit notes.

Truck-camper fit isn't one-size-fits-all across model years — frame, cab clearance, and suspension change between generations. Here's where each Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro sits.

2015

Single model year on the 2nd Gen body. Suspension and bed geometry behave like the base 2nd Gen.

2017–2023

Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro 3rd Gen TRD Pro

Strongest TRD Pro fit — proven 3rd Gen platform with FOX 2.5 dampers that handle camper weight without rear sag.

2024+

Cab is 3–4″ taller than 3rd Gen AND the i-FORCE Max powertrain adds ~250 lb. Both factors compound — fitment review required.

The math

Your payload margin, calculated.

Real numbers for a fully-provisioned Kimbo install on a Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro at the middle of its payload range. Substitute your own door-jamb sticker for a precise calculation.

  • Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro payload (mid-range)+ 1,190 lb
  • Kimbo 6 (base) 830 lb
  • Fresh water (4 gal) 32 lb
  • Propane (20 lb tank) 30 lb
  • Gear load 100 lb
  • 1 occupant in cab (200 lb) 200 lb

Remaining margin

-2 lb

Calculated using the midpoint of the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro's published payload range. Your specific truck's door-jamb sticker is what counts. Trim packages, options (sunroofs, larger wheels), and tow packages can swing this number by 200–500 lb in either direction.

The Kimbo team's pick

If we were buying a Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

If you're shopping a TRD Pro specifically for a Kimbo, get a 3rd Gen (2017–2023) Double Cab Short Bed. The factory FOX 2.5 dampers handle Kimbo weight without aftermarket suspension, the bed geometry is the proven 3rd Gen pattern, and resale stays strong. Skip the 4th Gen until our 4th Gen install pattern is finalized.
